Lot Essay

With its strikingly balanced case architecture, reference 2508 distinguishes itself from its time-only counterparts and is widely regarded as one of Patek Philippe's best examples of mid-century design. It was the manufacturer's first serious attempt to create a waterproof case for a simple wristwatch. The renowned chronograph reference 1463, from which the 2508 derived a large portion of its robust aesthetic language, had up until that point been the only wriswatch from the manufacturer to be waterproof. Rarely seen in traditional Calatrava models, the screw-back case, downturned lugs, and dial's harmonious proportions create a confident, masculine wrist presence.

At its heart beats the legendary calibre 27SC, one of the most respected center-seconds movements of its era. Interestingly, the movement is shielded from moisture and magnetism by a metal dust cap, a feature more frequently found in functional 'tool' watches. This particular technical aspect highlights the reference's distinct place in Patek Philippe's heritage: a sophisticated Calatrava combined with the robustness and functionality of a sports watch, combining style and toughness in a way that few other models accomplished.
