Provenance
Almost certainly John Vaughan (1639-1713), 3rd Earl of Carbery, Lord of the Admiralty (1683–1684) and President of the Royal Society,
almost certainly acquired from the estate of the above by Sir Richard Gough (1655-1728),
thence by descent in the Gough family at Gough House, Chelsea, London, until 1924, when sold by Mrs. Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe to J. Rochelle Thomas, London,
with Charles of London, New York,
with Max Williams,
from whom acquired by Junius S. Morgan III (1892-1960), grandson of the financier, J.P. Morgan (1837-1913) and thence by descent until sold Junius Morgan’s estate sale, Salutation, Glen Cove, Long Island (on the premises); Sotheby’s Parke Bernet, New York, 30 May 1974, 2nd of 4 days, lot 487, where acquired by the present owners.
