Auguste Bertsch was one of the major pioneers of photomicrography in the nineteenth century. Much of his work focused on insects and isolated anatomical structures, such as the bee’s mouthpart depicted here, which he examined under the microscope. In 1857, he published Études d’Histoire Naturelle au Microscope, a landmark work in the field. By treating the insect as a form to be observed, framed, and isolated, Bertsch anticipated a modern approach to the photography of living organisms, situated at the intersection of scientific investigation and formal artistic construction.
