Initially a painter and later a photographer, Pierre Molinier joined the Surrealist movement in 1955 under the influence of André Breton, yet he pushed its principles toward a uniquely radical extreme. His work obsessively explores the dissolution of boundaries between masculine and feminine, human and object, sacred and obscene. Cross-dressing, fetishism, and transgressive eroticism enabled him to seek, through the image, a primordial androgynous state that existed prior to any assignment of gender.
This vision finds expression in Le Chaman et ses créatures (The Shaman and His Creatures), a series of photomontages produced in the late 1960s, which includes Le Stylite and Sur le Pavois. Half-human and half-creature, Molinier stages himself masked and hybridized with mannequins, giving rise to a chimera. The photomontage thus becomes the site of a metamorphosis in which the artist serves as the medium of his own desire.
Two other photographs from this series are included in the Roger Therond Collection: Effigie (Online Sale, Lot 368) and La petite Baphomet (Online Sale, Lot 369).
