Lot Essay

Many square formatted mandalas of Vajravarahi illustrate cremation grounds separated by winding streams (c.f. HAR 1843 and 48324). The chocolate brown edge suggests its production in Western Tibet, a feature shared by two fourteenth century paintings sold in Bonhams, Hong Kong: a five-portrait Kagyu lineage thangka (24 May 2021, lot 8), and a thangka of Chakrasamvara (1 December 2023, lot 1843).
