GUY FRANÇOIS (C.1578-1650), THE LIFE OF JOHN THE BAPTIST, OIL ON CANVAS, DATED

Born in Le Puy-en-Velay, Guy François (c.1578-1650) spent the majority of his career in the provinces, with the exception of a stay in Rome in the first decade of the 17th century. He was among the first to bring the principles of Caravaggism back to France following this journey, and played a part in disseminating them in his region. He produced mainly religious compositions, which still adorn the churches of the south of France today. For the past fifty or so years, his work has finally begun to emerge from obscurity, first thanks to the thesis of Marie-Félicie Perez in 1968, and then through a monographic exhibition organised in 1974 in the painter's native region. These events made it possible to progressively reconstruct the corpus of the artist and ultimately to the publication of his catalogue raisonné in 2018 by Bruno Saunier.

This Life of Saint John the Baptist can be connected with a black chalk drawing listed in the artist's catalogue raisonné (B. Saunier, Guy François vers 1578-1650 : peintre caravagesque du Puy-en-Velay, Paris, 2018, p. 201, no. D2, fig. 1), now in the Art Institute of Chicago. This drawing shows the position of the saint at the centre of our painting, full-length, seated and leaning on his elbow, his foot resting on a rock with a lamb resting beside him. It is on this rock that the painter chose to sign and date his composition, allowing us to add this Life of Saint John the Baptist to the only other dated painting from 1620, The Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus Appearing to Saint Francis, still in the parish church of Saint-Pierre-des-Carmes in Le Puy-en-Velay for which it was painted.

Following a visual examination of the work, this painting by Guy François will be published by Bruno Saunier in a forthcoming article.

Lot Essay
