Each with pierced intertwined vase-shaped splat with a pair of rosettes below confronting rockwork C-scrolls, the serpentine toprail terminating in shells, the outcurved arms on serpentine supports, the padded rectangular seat covered in red velvet, on square legs joined by an H-shaped stretcher, previously with pierced angle-brackets, the fronts legs inlaid with a horizontal band (2)

Lot Essay

The relatively flat carving on this pair of chairs, together with the shell and rosette motifs, are characteristics found on Irish furniture. The combination of a richly-decorated back and plain legs, is also an Irish feature.
