Lot Essay

This jardinière is of the same model as that supplied to Queen Hortense de Beauharnais for her appartements in the rue Cerutti. Now in the Musée National de Malmaison, the latter is depicted in A. Garneray's celebrated watercolour of the Boudoir de la Reine Hortense of 1811 and may well have been supplied by Jacob frères (illustrated in Leon de Groër, Les Arts Décoratifs de 1790 à 1850, Fribourg, 1985, p.73, fig.119 and p.39, ill. no.56).
