AN AIKUCHI TANTO BLADE IN A SILVER MOUNTED EBI KOSHIRAE
Mei: Oite Tokyo Mito ju Masakatsu saku, dated Meiji 3, Meiji Period (1870)
The blade osoraku-zukuri, iorimune, koitame-hada with ji-nie, gunome hamon of nie with ashi and much sunagashi extending into the very long kissaki with hakikakke boshi, ubu nakago, 9.5/8in. (24.4cm); in a ribbed black lacquer ebisaya with gold lacquer cherry blossom and waves, the tsuka similarly lacquered, matching silver mounts comprising a fuchi-kashira, koiguchi, tsuka with tsutsugane, kozuka, wari-kogai, saya with kurikata on a tsutsugane and kojiri, all similarly carved with waves and gilt cherry blossom, the kozuka and koiguchi signed Yatsuji Katsusada, the wari-kogai and kojiri signed with kao, silver mekugi formed as flowers, gilt details, Edo Period (19th century)
