A LACQUER WRITING BOX (KAKESUZURIBAKO)

Constructed in the rectangular shape of a koto, slightly arched and resting on four short feet, lacquered on the exterior in mokume togidashi, gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, red lacquer and gold foil, the inset end panels on the lid tortoise shell decorated with gold lacquer phoenixes and paulownia and with the edge of a 'brocade' cover cloth, the underside of the lid and the utensil tray, which is suspended above the inkstone tray, each decorated in gold lacquer and gold foil with sparrows and bamboo or young pines on a mura-nashiji ground, the base of the untensil tray, the removable inkstone tray and the lower interior matching; fitted with a rectangular inkstone and a soft-metal mizuire in the form of two metal bridges supporting the strings of a koto, rims of the box silver
