Lot Essay

Lamb and Collins illustrate and describe a similar piece by Clarke & Co. as item 8.12 ("England: circa 1890"), which is the same diameter (7.6cm.), and seems to be similar in typography and manufacture, but has no plinth (p. 105). The "Coats" label on the present example has been pasted on, and there is a (?) maker's device printed on the gores: "11 22 21 Rd. E 3". However, as these items seemed to be produced for retail by thread making companies, it is difficult to attribute a manufacturer.
