Rectangular étui-à-tablettes, both sides enamelled with translucent blue on a ground of wavy horizontal engine-turning scattered with flowerheads, both sides of the cover applied with the word Souvenir in rose-cut diamonds, and both sides of the base set with glazed oval miniatures painted en grisaille on a night-blue ground with Satyrs and Maenads worshipping statues of Pan, the matted gold mounts set with split-pearls incorporated in ribbon-twist bands, the side mounts similarly adorned with bands of trailing foliage enamelled in translucent green alternating with split-pearls, the pushpiece set with a rose-cut diamond; inside tablets and a pencil with gold cap

Lot Essay

Jacques-Joseph de Gault (1738 - after 1812) specialised in miniatures peintes à bas-relief which were mounted on gold boxes or carnets as in the present case. In most cases, de Gault worked with the celebrated goldsmith Pierre-François Drais several boxes by whom with Bacchanalia miniatures by de Gault are to be found in the Louvre and in the Wallace Collection.
