A FINE CARVED RED LACQUER SQUARE TRAY
15th/16th century
Deeply carved through the thick red layers with a scholar and his attendant holding a lingzhi, standing below a giant pine tree beside a terrace railing, gazing at a waterfall flowing into the river, the ground intricately incised with various patterns, the everted sides carved in the interior and at the exterior with peony, chrysanthemum, prunus and magnolia branches through to a mustard-brown ground, the base plain black, age cracks, minor flakes and retouches
