A GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK SPORTING RIFLE
Dated 1663
With earlier swamped octagonal sighted barrel cut with eight grooves, struck twice with barrelmaker's mark 'WK', engraved with the date '1646' and retaining some original blued finish, plain lock with external wheel retained by a moulded narrow bracket and fitted with sliding pan-cover (the cover-spring missing), walnut full stock decorated over its rear half with incised panels of shaded foliage, involving a stag in woodland over the cheek-piece and incised with the date '1663' opposite the lock, fitted with sliding patch-box cover decorated en suite, the fore-end fluted over its length, and fitted with iron trigger-guard and set trigger (the ramrod-pipe, the fore-end cap and the ramrod each replaced).
