A GROUP OF SIX MANJU NETSUKE
Edo period (19th century)
A rounded square ivory manju netsuke carved with Yamanaka Shiga no Suke Yukimori hurling a rock, 21/8in. (5.3cm.); another of rounded rectangular section carved with Daruma brandishing a hossu, 2in. (5cm.); another of marine ivory with Handaka Sonja holding up his bowl, signed on the reverse Shohosai with a kao, 2in. (5cm.); A stained ivory manju netsuke carved and pierced with quails in millet, with signature Horaku in an oval reserve, 1½in. (3.8cm.); another modelled as a small circular box and cover carved with a shishi standing on a mokugyo and archaic kanji characters, 1¾in. (4.5cm.); and a kagamibuta, the iron plate with a No actor playing the drum, within an ivory bowl, 1½in. (3.7cm.) (6)

Lot Essay

Yamanaka Shiga no Suke Yukimori (1542-1576) was a famous warrior known for his extraordinary strength. Handaka Sonja is one of the sixteen rakan. He is most often depicted with a bowl from which is emerging a dragon or a cloud.
