A LARGE FRENCH ORMOLU-MOUNTED MAHOGANY, BURR WALNUT, EBONY AND EBONISED BIBLIOTHEQUE
OF LOUIS XIV STYLE, ATTRIBUTED TO MERCIER FRÈRES, PARIS, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Of breakfront outline, the stepped top above a moulded cornice with an acanthus-cast frieze, above a central panel door headed by a male mask, flanked by a pair of glazed panel doors, within ormolu surrounds and hung with grey silk curtains, with a further panel door to each side, the interior with adjustable shelves, on a conforming plinth base

Lot Essay

This large bookcase is after the grand bibliothèque in ‘Boulle’ marquetry by Levasseur in the Wallace Collection, London (120 (F390)).
When sold at Christie’s, London, 26 February 1998 this bibliothèque was offered en suite with a bureau plat by Mercier Frères. The bureau plat was subsequently sold ‘Property from the Collection of Dr Mohammed Said Farsi’, Christie’s, London, 17 March 2011, lot 20 (£25,000).
