A LOUIS XV TORTOISESHELL AND GOLD CAGEWORK SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE
Paris, probably 1750-1752, maker's mark rubbed but possibly that of Pierre-Aimé Joubert (fl. 1735-1759), with the charge and discharge marks of Antoine Leschaudel 1744-1750 and with the discharge marks of Julien Berthe 1750-1756, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold, the miniature Continental School, circa 1690/1700
Rectangular box, the cover, four sides and base inset with dark tortoiseshell panels within a gold cagework of fluted scrolls with incorporated slightly raised thumbpiece, the lid later set with a glazed oil miniature of a lady facing right in white frill-edged blue dress, with high-piled curly hair, within a pierced ribbon and garland gold frame
