A Stacked Lacquer Writing Box and Stationery Box (Kakesuzuribako)
Edo period (19th century)
Composed of a rectangular writing box raised above a stationery compartment of equal depth and fitted with two silver cord attachments in the form of chrysanthemum florets and rings, the exterior of the boxes designed with an overall pattern of large chrysanthemum medallions and scrolling foliage in gold and silver hiramaki-e and togidashi on a dense, yellow nashiji ground, the bevelled, recessed edges gyobu; the writing box nashiji, fitted with a removable tray holding a rectangular inkstone and circular silver mizuire cast with leaf scroll within a silver saucer; the stationery compartment and the base also nashiji, the rims silver
