Signed Bishu Osafune ju nin Yokoyama Kozuke daijo Fujiwara Sukesada, Edo Period (17th Century)
The blade hon-zukuri, iorimune, ko-itame with mokume hada with ji-nie, gunome-choji hamon with konie, ubu nakago, 57.6cm., in its black lacquer saya with dragons chasing a gold jewel inlaid in silver hirazogan, the jewel in high relief, the koiguchi and uragawara of silver, the shakudo fuchi-kashira carved and inlaid with deeply cut waves and dragons in gilt takazogan, signed Tokuno Hidetatsu and kao - Tosaizanma (ni) oite korewo saku, the kozuka signed Tokuno Hidetatsu and kao, the otafuku-mokkogata shakudo tsuba chiselled with gilt clouds, a dragon forming the rim, large shakudo menuki formed as two Chinese immortals, heavily gilt, 19th century

Aoi Plant design of a hollyhock leaf (Asarum caulescens)
Aoigata Sword guard shape in the form of a hollyhock leaf. In fashion the Nara period, but used sporadically until the late Edo period
Aorigata "Saddle-flap" or rounded trapezoid shape
Dai "Great"; the larger of a pair of swords or sword guards worn as a pair. Also kanji used as a stamp design on later Tembo sword guards.
Daisho "Great, small"; a pair of large and small objects, usually referring to swords and sword guards.
Fuchi-kashira The pair of metal fittings which form the ferrule and cap of the hilt.
Fukurin Rim cover; usually of soft metal and used mainly as a decorative addition to a sword guard plate
Futatokoromono A kogai or kozuka and a pair of menuki as a set
Gaiso The complete mounting for a blade including the hilt, scabbard and metal end fittings.

Go-san no kiri-mon A paulownia crest with five flower buds in the center and three on either side. See Kiri-mon
Hitsu-ana One or two holes in a sword guard on each side of the central aperture through which the kogai and kozuka are fitted
Inome-bori sukashi Heart-shaped openings of very early origin; first used on the hollyhock-form sword guard
Ishimeji Sword guard surface roughly hammered with a series of variously sized punches to give a texture resembling stone
Ji A surface
Jiita The plate within the frame of a kozuka handle which serves as the background support for the applied parts of the design
Kakihan A monogram
Kao A monogram seal
Karakusa A common design of arabesque vines, leaves and flowers
Kebori Line carving of consistent depth and width

Kojiri Cap for the bottom of a scabbard, usually of metal of horn
Ko-kinko "Old kinko"; soft metal workers of the Muromachi and Momoyma periods
Koshirae A complete sword mounting; See Gaiso.
Kozuka The auxiliary knife and its handle which is fitted into the outside wall of a katana scabbard
Kozuka hitsu-ana The opening to the left of the central slot of a sword guard through which a kozuka passes
Kurikata The cord ring on the scabbard
Kuro-shibuichi "Black shibuichi"; a very dark alloy of copper and silver
Kyo-sukashi Pierced in Kyoto style
Mei Signature
Menuki Decorative metal ornaments on each side of a sword hilt to enhance the grip
Mitokoromono A kogai, kozuka and a pair of menuki mounted as a set
Mokko Four-lobed, like a cross-section of a type of gourd
Mokume hada Forging pattern resembling burl wood grain
Mon Heraldic crest of a family; when a family claimed two crests, the primary was called a jo-mon, the secondary a kae-mon
Mon (Goto mei) Kanji preceding the attributed artist's name stating that this attribution is for the decoration only. It appears on the back of kogai and kozuka.
Mon sukashi The design motif of a mon, usually pierced through a sword guard in negative openwork

Nakago-ana The central aperture of a sword guard through which the tang of a sword passes when the sword guard is fitted into position
Nanako "Fish roe", a pattern of small raised dots made with a hollow punch on the plates of fittings
Nawa "Rope"; any design motif of twisted form resembling rope
Neko yasuri "Cat scratched"; a soft metal finish resembling a cat scratched surface
Nunome-zogan "Cloth" inlay, gold or silver leaf burnished onto a cross-hatched iron ground
Origami A certificate of authenticity issued by an individual appraiser or panel
Rogin "Hazy silver"; alloy of silver and copper of high silver content
Ryo-hitsu "Both openings"; the apertures either side of the central aperture of a sword guard through which the kogai and kozuka pass
Sahari White metal alloy of copper, tin and lead
Same Skin of the giant ray used on sword hilts and occasionally scabbards
Sekigane Soft metal plugs mounted in the ryo-hitsu of iron sword guards
Seppa-dai "Washer-platform", the central area of a sword guard around the nakago-ana covered by the washer
Shakudo Alloy of approximately 95 copper and 5 gold with a raven black patina
Shakudo fukurin A shakudo rim cover
Shibuichi An alloy of copper and silver with a silvery-grey patina
Shiho inome sukashi "Four boar eyes"; perforations at the four indentations of a mokko sword guard
