EINSTEIN'S TWO PASSIONS, SAILING AND MUSIC. Einstein is delighted with a letter from Hans Albert: 'I can easily picture the boat. That was my passion too at your age, but I didn't have such a fine expanse of water at my disposal, only a circular tin tub of 1 metre diameter. So the boats had to be small too .... It is a lovely Mozart sonata, the one you played; I know it well. But stick to the Mozart sonatas; it was through those that your father really got to know music'. The letter continues with a reference to Mileva, to whom Hans Albert is to show his father's letters, and a project for a visit to Swizterland; if Hans Albert is particularly interested in anything connected with his school work, Einstein will be happy to send him a book on the subject. The postcard of 24 December 1917 refers to books sent to his sons for Christmas, and to his own indisposition with a stomach ulcer; 'Tell me whether Tetel [Eduard] has come home yet. If not, send him the fairy tale book, the 1,001 Nights'. (2)
