Lot Essay

Following his visit to Morocco in 1952, Minton exhibited a group of watercolours of Moroccan subjects including the present work, at the Lefevre Gallery in December 1953. From this watercolour he painted a large oil, Portuguese Cannon, Mazagan, Morocco (1953; Tate Gallery, London; see F. Spalding, Dance till the Stars Come Down A Biography of John Minton, London, 1991, pl. 17).
