Circular and on spreading foot, with a reeded mid-band and two leaf-capped harp-shaped handles, engraved with a presentation inscription, marked near handle, engraved underneath 'No. 2165 oz. 81.20', fitted with a later detachable metal liner, with two flat handles

The inscription reads 'To Henry William Frederic Albert of York from his affectionate Great Grandmother and Godmother Victoria R.I. May 1900'.

Queen Victoria recorded the christening in her journal and noted the names, commenting that she had 'named the child,' N. Frankland, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, London, 1980, p. 4. She described the christening robe which had first been worn by her eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, Dowager Empress of Germany (1840-1901) and commented on the choice of hymns, the first of which had been composed by Prince Albert and the second by her youngest daughter and fellow godparent, Princess Beatrice (see lot 4).
