In moulded, carved and polychrome walnut, the rectangular canted back decorated with a pearl and a frieze of rais-de-coeurs, the armrests upholstered with cuffs ending in scrolls on cavet consoles decorated with a fall of piastres applied with an acanthus leaf, the seat rail decorated with a pearl and a frieze of rais-de-coeurs, the tapered legs with helical flutes, ending in a top; Circular stamped ‘BERNARD’ on the back rail of one of the armchairs, green damask silk cover decorated with flowers; small accident and one cover stained

Lot Essay

Pierre Bernard (1730-1788), son of the cabinetmaker Pierre Amour Bernard, was a joiner established on rue de Lappe in Paris. His clients included wealthy collectors such as the Marquis de Laborde at the Château de Méréville.A similar armchair is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (inv. 7960) and is illustrated below.
