This June, Christie’s will offer a selection of works from the artist and author’s personal collection in Maurice Sendak: Artist, Collector, Connoisseur. Works by George Stubbs and Johann Heinrich Fuseli sit alongside original Sendak artworks, providing collectors a peek into the dazzling mind behind such classics as Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen. Among the most anticipated lots are Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience by poet and artist William Blake, whose fantastical visions inspired Sendak’s own dreamlike worlds.
To help ensure that children will continue to be enchanted by the next generation of visual storytellers, this sale will support the Sendak Fellowship at the Maurice Sendak Foundation, a residency programme that encourages, teaches and supports artists who tell stories with illustration.
