To honour the nation’s 250th birthday, Christie’s is pleased to present a cross-category masterpiece auction during our January 2026 Americana Week in New York, which will encompass the spirit of American history and culture. From important historical documents and books to singular works of art and craftsmanship in a variety of media, We the People: America at 250 will feature significant pieces that illuminate the multifaceted story of the United States. The sale is led by several important foundational documents including Rufus King’s printed and edited draft of the Committee of Style Draft of the Constitution, a 1776 broadside printing of the Declaration of Independence, a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln, as well as the 1976 partnership agreement that established Apple Computer. The sale also includes many significant pieces of American art led by a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington painted for James Madison; significant works by James Sharples, Charles Peale Polk, Childe Hassam, Joshua Johson, John Stobart, Franklin Dullin Briscoe, Jimmy Carter, as well as Grant Wood's original study for American Gothic. Other important objects include the only flag recovered by U.S. forces from the Battle of Little Bighorn, a magnificent painted Grecian couch after a design by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, and the Drinker-Cope Family Queen Anne Carved Walnut High Chest-of-Drawers.
