Rabindranath Tagore and Mungpoo

The Collection and Archive of Maitreyi Devi

  • Event date 11月10日 - 12月18日
  • Event location 孟买

One of the greatest polymaths of our time, Rabindranath Tagore is celebrated as a renowned educator, poet and philosopher as well as the first non-European person to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 and the composer of the national anthems of two countries. These achievements alone stand as testament to an extraordinary life. However, for Tagore, a final major chapter was not to be written but drawn. In his sixties, the Nobel laureate also took up painting, developing the doodles he created in his personal journals into elaborate and expressive figure studies and landscapes which he then exhibited around the world.

Commemorating the 165th anniversary of Tagore’s birth and the 260th anniversary of the founding of Christie’s, we are honored to present one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of his mature artistic and literary practice at Christie’s in Mumbai. Documenting the close relationship Tagore cultivated with his protégé Maitreyi Devi, and the four visits he made to her family home in the tranquil village of Mungpoo in Darjeeling district during the last decade of his life, this exhibition brings together over 25 artworks and more than 150 letters and handwritten manuscripts of poems, songs and books, alongside signed first editions of his books, vintage photographs and personal effects.

Presenting Rabindranath Tagore as the ultimate renaissance man and the embodiment of a national cultural revitalization, this exhibition underlines his role as one of the most pivotal figures in the shaping of modern India.

About Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was one of India's foremost cultural figures: a poet, novelist, playwright, philosopher and composer who became the first non-European recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Through his writings, music and educational vision, he played a defining role in shaping modern Indian identity. Tagore's artistic practice began with fantastical jottings and doodles in his notebooks and diaries before he turned to drawing and painting in his sixties. Despite this late start, he created one of the most distinctive bodies of work in the history of modern Indian art. Largely self-taught, he developed a deeply personal visual language, marked by enigmatic figures, imagined creatures and expressive forms that defied academic conventions that dominated Indian art under British rule. Tagore is seen by many as the father of modern Indian art, as his works resist any categorisation, and are visceral , dynamic, instinctive and powerful. In the 1970s, India officially designated Tagore as one of the country's nine 'National Art Treasures', noting that his artworks were considered of such cultural importance that they were not permitted to be exported from India any more. Tagore's artistic career spanned just over a decade, culminating when he died in 1941, making his drawings and paintings exceptionally rare. Combined with his towering cultural legacy and the continued strength of the market for Indian modern art, this scarcity has ensured enduring demand for his works among collectors and institutions.

About Maitreyi Devi

Maitreyi Devi (1914-1990), the acclaimed novelist, poet and social worker, was born in Chittagong, in what is now Bangladesh, and grew up in Calcutta, where she attended high school and college. Her father, Surendranath Dasgupta, was a scholar, philosopher and close friend of Rabindranath Tagore, and Maitreyi Devi became one of Tagore’s favourite protégées at an early age. In 1930, when she was just sixteen, she published her first collection of poetry, for which Tagore wrote a preface. Four years later, she married Dr Manmohan Sen, who specialised in the study and cultivation of medicinal quinine. When they married, Dr Sen worked as a quinologist with the Government Cinchona Plantation in the picturesque hill settlement of Mungpoo in Darjeeling district, and Maitreyi Devi moved there to live with him. During the family’s time in Mungpoo, Tagore visited and stayed in their home on four separate occasions, between 1938 and 1940. A favourite mountain retreat for Tagore, Mungpoo inspired several of his mature artistic and literary creations. After Tagore’s death in 1941, Maitreyi Devi published the Bengali memoir ‘Mongpute Rabindranath’ (which she then translated to English as ‘Tagore by Fireside’), intimately documenting the Nobel laureate’s time in Mungpoo. In the early 1970s, she published ‘Rabindranath – The Man behind his Poetry’ and lectured on Tagore at the University of Chicago. Her novel from the same period, ‘Na Hanyate’ (‘It Doesn’t Die’), won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1976. The next year, she was awarded the Padma Shri, one of the highest honours bestowed by the Government of India. In the footsteps of her guru, Maitreyi Devi spent her last twenty years founding and running the residential school Khelaghar, which continues to serve the needs of impoverished children today.
