A TERRACOTTA MODEL FOR A MONUMENT OR A FOUNTAIN, SIGNED J MICHEL, FRENCH, DATED 1779

The signature ‘J. Michel’ may be that of Pierre-Joseph Michel, the brother of Clodion, a terracotta artist with a style similar to that of the present work. Pierre-Joseph Michel’s works are rare, and his career was considerably overshadowed by the success enjoyed by his brother. Their style and subjects are very similar. To our knowledge, seven works by him are known today, including six in terracotta, generally signed ‘P. Michel’ or ‘pierre michel’. The latest to appear on the market, The Seesaw, was signed ‘pierre michel’ and acquired in 2008 by the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris (inv. 2008.3).

Non identifiée, la signature ‘J. Michel’ pourrait avoir été celle de Pierre-Joseph Michel, frère de Clodion, adepte de la terre cuite et au style proche de notre œuvre. Les oeuvres de Pierre-Joseph Michel sont rares et sa carrière assombrie considérablement par le succès de son frère. Leur style et leurs sujets sont très proches. À notre connaissance, sept oeuvres sont connues aujourd'hui, dont six terres cuites. Elles sont généralement signées ‘P. Michel’ ou ‘pierre michel’. La dernière réapparue sur le marché et signée "pierre michel" est intitulée La Bascule et fut acquise en 2008 par le musée Cognacq-Jay à Paris (inv. 2008.3).
