Jean-Baptiste Greuze

Jean-Baptiste Greuze was one of the most celebrated painters of 18th-century France, renowned for his emotionally charged genre scenes, expressive portraits and masterful studies of heads. His moralising paintings reflected the Enlightenment ideals that art should depict everyday life while encouraging a virtuous existence.

Born in Tournus, Burgundy in 1725, Greuze trained in Lyon before settling in Paris, where he rose to prominence at the Salon during the 1750s and 1760s. He transformed everyday subjects into compelling dramas, combining naturalism with theatrical composition and balancing sentiment with a subtle sensuality. Works such as The Broken Pitcher (c.1772), The Village Bride (1761) and Girl with a Dead Canary (1765) exemplify the artist's ability to imbue seemingly ordinary subjects with a striking psychological depth.

Alongside his narrative paintings, Greuze became one of the finest portraitists and draughtsmen of his generation. His sensitively modelled studies of heads — often executed in oil or red chalk — demonstrate the artist’s exceptional command of expression, texture and light. At the height of his career, his works ranked among the most sought-after and expensive paintings in France.

Although Greuze aspired to be recognised as a history painter, his poorly received reception piece for the Royal Academy in 1769 resulted in his admission only as a genre painter, which prompted a lasting dispute with the institution.

Greuze died in 1805 in Paris. Today, his works are held in major museum collections, including the Louvre, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the J. Paul Getty Museum. His intimate works continue to be admired for their immediacy, technical refinement and psychological insight.
