Mr.

Born Masakatsu Iwamoto in 1969 in Cupa, Japan, Mr. is a prominent figure in the Superflat movement, a postmodern art style pioneered by Takashi Murakami. His work merges the aesthetics of Japanese anime and manga with elements of otaku culture, creating vivid, cartoon-like compositions that explore themes of innocence, fantasy and psychological tension. Drawing inspiration from his own experiences and the broader cultural landscape, Mr. employs a visual language that is both playful and unsettling, often depicting youthful characters in surreal, chaotic environments.

Educated at the Sokei Art School in Tokyo, Mr. began his artistic career in the late 1990s. He was discovered by Takashi Murakami, who invited him to join his Kaikai Kiki studio, providing mentorship and support. This collaboration significantly influenced Mr.'s development and exposure in the art world.

Mr.'s works have been exhibited internationally, including solo shows at institutions such as the Phoenix Art Museum, Perrotin in Paris and Lehmann Maupin in New York. His art has been featured in major exhibitions like Little Boy: The Arts of Japan’s Exploding Subculture at the Japan Society in New York and Live On: Mr.’s Japanese Neo-Pop at the Seattle Art Museum.

In addition to his visual art, Mr. has ventured into video and installation art, further expanding his exploration of otaku culture and its implications.
