拍賣簡介

Traversing the most significant movements of the modern and post-war eras, this November’s 20th Century Evening Sale celebrates the vanguard artists who defined the period.

From the Parisian studios of the Impressionists to the downtown lofts of post-war New York, the sale presents masterpieces from across the century, featuring works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Robert DelaunayAlexander Calder, Richard Diebenkorn and David Hockney. This season also presents a significant selection of monumental sculpture by pioneering artists including Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and David Smith.

Highlights of the November sale possess remarkable provenance, hailing from pre-eminent private collections and unparalleled institutional holdings. Leading the season is Birth of the Modern: The Arnold and Joan Saltzman Collection, a landmark group that encapsulates the radical spirit of early modernism through seminal works by Léger, Kupka, Moore, and Matisse, among other luminaries.

Christie’s is also honoured to present Property from the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art in Japan, where groundbreaking works by Monet, Renoir and Chagall shine alongside pieces by post-war artists such as Lee Ufan, as well as Collector/Connoisseur: The Max N. Berry Collections, which brings together Calder’s dynamic sculptures with Giacometti’s probing works. The sale also includes seminal American masterpieces by John Singer Sargent within In Pursuit of Light: The Collection of Carol and Terry Wall, as well as Impressionist highlights within the Property from the Bill and Dorothy Fisher Collection Sold to Benefit The Community of Marshalltown, Iowa. In line with the 100th anniversary of Joan Mitchell’s birth, the auction showcases a significant work by the female Abstract Expressionist within Elaine: The Collection of Elaine Wynn, which also features a diverse array of iconic works by artists ranging from Joseph Mallord William Turner to Wayne Thiebaud.
