Our 20th and 21st Century Art auctions in May totalled US$693 million, 123% over low estimate, surpassing the totals from our previous two seasons. The top lot of the series was Piet Mondrian’s rare 1922 masterwork Composition with Large Red Plane, Bluish Gray, Yellow, Black and Blue, which realised US$47,560,000, from Leonard & Louise Riggio: Collected Works. Claude Monet established a new record for his famed ‘Poplars’ series while Marlene Dumas achieved the highest price ever paid for a work by a living female artist. Eight world auction records were set across the series of six auctions.
