A RHODIAN 'WILD GOAT' POTTERY AMPHORA, round-mouthed, with gently curving concave neck, the twin side handles in the form of horns in relief, with painted eyes and eyebrows below, the whole covered in a cream-coloured slip, the body decorated with a frieze of six grazing goats with high curving horns, infilling motifs including dotted rosettes and semicircles, crossed diamonds, volutes, a scrolling swastika and a stemmed palmette, between the handles a goat looking backwards and a bird, each flanked by a column of interlocking figure-of-eights, similar infilling motifs in the field, with dividing bands of S-shaped scrolls, rope-pattern and a broad band above the foot of pelta-shaped motifs connected by crosshatching and stylized palmettes, the neck decorated with a frieze of lotus flowers and interlinked scrolls, repaired, late 7th-early 6th Century B.C.
