James Hunt
World Championship driver 1976.

Winner of ten Grands Prix. After his first win for Hesketh in 1975 Hunt drove for McLaren from 1976 until 1978 and was signed to drive for Wolf in 1979. After the contract was signed James was at very close quarters to Ronnie Peterson's fatal accident at Monza; and was commended for his bravery in helping to extract Ronnie from his car. This had a profound effect on him and in the paddock at Monza he asked to released from his commitment to Walter Wolf Racing. Subsequently he changed his mind, but from the start of the 1979 season it was clear that his heart was no longer in driving, so it came as no surprise when he chose to retire after the Monaco Grand Prix (a street circuit which he hated). Painted in the very familiar black colour with his Wellington School colours around the lower half, this Bell helmet carries a 1978 RAC approval sticker, as well as a little foam pad covered with black tape high on the front, which he used to attach to help wedge the visor open in the up position. This helmet used at Monaco in 1979 is therefore the last one used by him in his career.
