Christie’s Dubai Sales concluded our 25th consecutive sale season in the region with a strong total of US$11,849,875. Fifteen new world auction records were set over the two auctions: Important Watches and Middle Eastern Modern & Contemporary Art. This spring, we recorded a healthy 18% of bidders new to Christie’s and approximately 70 lots – a quarter of the total offering – experienced online activity.
Our annual Important Watches auction totalled US$8,130,375 on 22 March, representing the highest sale total for any watch auction conducted in the Middle East, with four lots selling above US$500,000 and 13 lots over US$100,000. Lively bidding at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel saleroom saw a Patek Philippe 18k gold chronograph ref. 1463 R set a new world auction record for the reference. Three other fine Patek Philippe creations – a ref. 1491, a ref. 3589 and a ref. 9508 gold and enamel light – achieved record-breaking prices.
On 23 March, the Middle Eastern Modern & Contemporary Art auction achieved US$3,719,500, with excellent sell-through rates of 88% by lots and 94% by value. Auction records were established for artists from Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Syria and Iraq, reaffirming the continued appeal of Middle Eastern art to collectors around the globe.
Following these successes, Christie’s Dubai looks forward to holding regular events in our newly refurbished exhibition space in the Dubai International Financial Centre and hosting valuation days in Beirut in April. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information on our upcoming events.
