Alfred James Munnings

Alfred James Munnings was one of Britain’s leading 20th-century painters, celebrated for his masterful depictions of horses and rural life. Working in an Impressionist style, he had an instinctive feel for movement which brought equestrian scenes vividly to life.

Born in Suffolk in 1878, Munnings spent his childhood sketching horses at his parents’ mill. After an early start as a printmaker’s apprentice, he found his enduring vocation in painting. Having lost his sight in one eye after a childhood accident, Munnings was given a civilian job during World War I where he oversaw animals being sent to the front lines in France. He later became an official war artist to the Canadian Cavalry Brigade, with a selection of these works exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1919.

Following the war, Munnings emerged as one of the foremost sporting painters of his generation, renowned for his ability to capture both the energy and immediacy of the racecourse. His portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with her champion racehorse Aureole sold for £2 million at Christie’s in 2016.

In 1944, the artist was elected President of the Royal Academy — a position he held until 1949. In his later years, Munnings became an outspoken critic of Modernism, most notably in his Royal Academy farewell address. Throughout the artist’s career, his focus remained on figurative depictions of pastoral England, with works such as A Barge on the Stour at Dedham and A View of Dedham Vale with Stacks in a Field. He died in 1959.

Today, Munnings’ works remain defining interpretations of British equestrian life. The Castle House in Dedham — where the artist lived from 1919 until his death — is now The Munnings Art Museum and forms the largest collection of his work in the world.
