19th Century American and Western Art

Sale Overview

Christie’s American Art department is thrilled to present its annual sale of 19th Century American and Western Art during Americana Week on 23 January. This curated auction of American paintings, works on paper and sculpture is led by masterworks of the period such as Albert Bierstadt’s epic California landscape, Rest on the Ride. Works by important artists from Winslow Homer to leading members of the Hudson River School feature alongside a strong offering of paintings by Martin Johnson Heade.

Thomas Moran’s stunning Grand Canyon landscape leads the Western category and headlines one of the auction’s marquee collections, Grand Views of America: Property from a Distinguished Private Collection. Other important Western artists highlighted include Thomas Hill and Joseph Henry Sharp along with a fantastic array of bronzes by Frederic Remington, Henry Shrady and more. Beyond artists traveling to the West, the auction represents the dynamism of American artists such as Sanford Gifford working abroad, notably including La Dolce Vita: Property from the Collection of Andrea Henderson Fahnestock.

In addition to the above, the auction includes a large and diverse offering of lots offered without reserve.
