Important Classic & Decorative Art

Important Classic & Decorative Art

Sale Overview

This February Important Classic and Decorative Art features a select group of furniture, silver, sculpture, porcelain and other items with important provenance, impeccable craftsmanship or rarity. The sale begins with a large 66-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex tooth, the supreme symbol of ferocity, before jumping forward in time to the 1st – 2st century AD to an important bust of Odysseus previously in the collection of Frederick Augustus Hervey, 4th Earl of Bristol (1730–1803). A rare bust of Benjamin Franklin by John Michael Rysbrack and a figure emblematic of song chiseled by the celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) herself round out the sculptures on offer. Highlights among the decorative arts include a fabulous Fabergé hardstone model of a Bearberry plant owned by Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, pair of ormolu-mounted Chinese porcelain carp ewers which epitomise the 18th-century French taste for luxury and refinement, and a pair of English mahogany serpentine commodes attributed to William Gomm and almost certainly commissioned for Stoneleigh Abbey. For the sumptuous table, there is a monumental silver punchbowl made by Gorham’s top of the line Martele division for the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair and a Chinese export ‘Tobacco leaf’ pattern dinner service from the Astor family.
