Americana Week

  • Event date 22 - 24 January
  • Event location New York

From important documents from our nation's founding to presidential portraits to colonial furniture and folk art, Americana Week offers the opportunity to collect rare and exciting pieces connected to the history and creativity of the United States.

Christie’s annual 19th Century American and Western Art sale features important works such as Thomas Moran’s stunning landscape Grand View Trail, as well as other fresh-to-market paintings, works on paper and sculpture that capture the frontier spirit. And for discerning collectors of 19th-century and Hudson River School masterworks, American Sublime: Property from an Important Private Collection offers exceptional and rare landscapes by masters of the period such as Thomas Cole and rare still lifes by Raphaelle Peale and others.

Important Americana brings together the finest examples of early American craftsmanship, with furniture by celebrated cabinetmakers such as John Goddard and boldly decorated pieces from the Finlay shop in Baltimore, as well as a compelling selection of folk art, including a newly discovered double-sided portrait by Ammi Phillips. Our selection of important American historical documents is led by the groundbreaking discovery of the Samuel Jones Declaration of Independence among other fresh-to-market offerings including letters and documents from Washington, Lincoln, Franklin and Hamilton.

Additionally silver is represented with classic examples from makers like Tiffany & Co. and Gorham, as well as exciting works in mixed metal, such as a magnificent punch set by Joseph Heinrich. Recognising that many of America’s great artists have been self-taught, Christie’s has developed an exciting program for Outsider Art, featuring masterpieces by the category’s top artists as well as significant works by up-and-coming names in the field.

Our online auction of Books and Manuscripts includes high points of modern literature, Incunabula from the Collection of Eugene S. Flamm, Highlights from the Owen Gingerich Astronomical Library, and more.

Browse the auctions and join us for our public exhibition at our Rockefeller Center galleries beginning 17 January.
