London’s combined evening sales achieved £218,603,400, building on a strong year and reaffirming the city’s enduring importance as a global centre for art and collecting. Two museum-quality masterpieces led the 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale. Wassily Kandinsky’s Das bunte Leben and Piet Mondrian’s Composition III each achieved more than £25 million, with Kandinsky securing the evening’s highest price.
Francis Bacon’s Figure in Movement led Monsoon: The Peter Simon Collection which was also crowned the highest-value single-owner collection ever sold at Christie's London with £107,508,800. Seven world auction records were set: artist records for Portia Zvavahera, Bridget Riley, Liubov Popova, David Bomberg and Igshaan Adams, alongside records for a painting by Dame Barbara Hepworth and a tapestry by Gerhard Richter.
Strong results continued across the Monsoon, Impressionist and Modern Art, Works on Paper, and Post-War and Contemporary Art day sales. Sales continue with the Post-War and Contemporary Art and Monsoon online auctions, alongside the Modern British and Irish Art auctions.
