Works from The De Morgan Foundation
Sale 6520
28 November 2001, 7:00 pm
8 King Street, St. James's, London
William De Morgan, ceramic artist, and his wife Evelyn, a painter, were important figures in the Arts and Crafts movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Foundation was later established to preserve the couple's paintings, works on paper and ceramics, and to further the knowledge and appreciation of art.
Superb works acquired by the Foundation and not by the De Morgan couple, are to be auctioned to help finance the Foundation's new gallery and study center. The works have never before been available to contemporary collectors, and present a unique opportunity to buyers worldwide to enhance their collections with rare works of this excellence.
Among the highlights are Rapunzel by Cadogan Cowper; Isabella by Strudwick; and several works by Spencer Stanhope, Evelyn De Morgan's uncle who lived outside Florence, Italy. Not surprisingly, Stanhope's paintings show profound Italian influence and carry echoes of Botticelli and other cinquecento masters. His paintings, much admired by Burne-Jones, were exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery 1988, a showcase for the avant-garde.
