The highlight of the sale is undoubtedly George Stubbs's sublime A Mare and Foal with a Bay Horse, 1771, but the 19th Century is also well represented with works by John Frederick Herring Senior, Harry Hall, John Emms and Thomas Blinks.
Leading the 20th Century section are major works by Sir Alfred Munnings, Archibald Thorburn and Lionel Edwards right through to the contemporary Henry Koehler and Colin Burns.
Stubbs's series of pictures of mares and foals is central to his oeuvre. His deftly crafted composition, A Mare and Foal with a Bay Horse, manages to convey a sense of space truly remarkable for a picture of relatively compact size.
Another splendid picture is Sir Alfred Munnings's The Grey Horse, one of his most romantic and evocative images. Showing Munnings's groom, Ned Osborne on 'Grey Tick', it was painted at Zennor in Cornwall shortly before the First World War.
