The sale features works by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough, and an important portrait of Samuel Taylor Coleridge by Thomas Phillips, R.A., for which the sitter, with typical self-deprecation, praised Phillips for having infused so much life into his 'crumbly old face'.
The Victorian Pictures section features The Charity Boys Debut by James Collinson, which so impressed Rossetti that he invited the artist to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.
The sale further offers works by Grimshaw, Leader and Percy; and a large group of works by the animal painter, John Frederick Herring.
