Sir Joshua Reynolds was an English painter and one of the most influential portraitists of the 18th century. As the founding president of the Royal Academy of Arts, he shaped the development of British art during his time, becoming a leading figure in the creation of ‘Grand Manner’, an idealised aesthetic style derived from classicism and High Renaissance art.
Joshua Reynolds was born in 1723 in Plympton, Devon, and showed early talent for drawing. He was apprenticed to the portraitist Thomas Hudson in London before embarking on a tour of Italy in 1749, where he studied the works of the Old Masters, including Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian. This trip deeply influenced his style and artistic philosophy, which he would later articulate in his ‘Discourses on Art’ (1769–90), a series of lectures delivered at the Royal Academy that emphasised the importance of studying classical art and developing a personal style.
Reynolds’ portraits became synonymous with British aristocracy and the emerging culture of celebrity. His portraits, rendered in rich colours and poses borrowed from classical paintings, captured his subjects in an elevated and heroic light, emphasising their character and status.
The artist was instrumental in the rise of portraiture as a dominant genre in British art. Reynolds’ mastery of light, colour and composition helped elevate portraiture to the level of history painting, which was considered the highest form of art at the time.
In 1768 with the founding of the Royal Academy of Arts, Reynolds became its inaugural president and remained in office until his death in 1792. Through his art, teachings and writings, Sir Joshua Reynolds left a lasting legacy on the landscape of British art.
