Christie’s Hong Kong HK$6.4B / US$835M annual running total for 2022 third highest on record exceeding Pre-Pandemic Level

Christie’s 2022 Hong Kong Autumn Auctions were held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 25 November to 3 December, and achieved a combined sale total of HK$2.7B / US$349M, with 15 auction records set across art and luxury, and participation from 51 countries spanning 6 continents.

The 20th/21st Century Art sales were led by the monumental Untitled by revered female Abstract Expressionist artist Joan Mitchell, which sold for HK$83,350,000 / US$10,720,227. The category’s five live auctions contributed to an annual sale total for 2022 of HK$3.4B / US$436M, the second highest annual total for the category in Asia. There continues to be a growing momentum for young and emerging artists from the East and the West, with a fantastic response to the first-ever Post-Millennium Evening Sale, and auction records achieved for Nicolas Party, Anna Park, and Stephen Wong Chun Hei, among others. The appeal of celebrated Western artists in Asia was also demonstrated through the dedicated sale of 20 works by Modern master Marc Chagall, which became a white-glove sale.

The Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art category continued to demonstrate Christie’s strength in offering single-owner collections with impressive provenance: Classical Chinese Furniture from the Tseng Collection, The Chang Wei-Hwa Collection of Archaic Jades Part IV, and Important 17th Century Porcelain from the Butler Family Collection were all 100% sold. Many Chinese paintings exceeded pre-sale expectations, with numerous exceptional pieces surpassing their high estimates multiple times over. Prominent single-owner collections of Chinese paintings, including Important Lin Fengmian Paintings From The Robert Chang Collection, and Important Huang Binhong Paintings And Calligraphy From The Xicha’an Collection were also 100% sold.

Autumn 2022 also proved to be a strong season for the Luxury cluster, as we retained our leadership of the Asian auction market in the Wine & Spirits and Handbags & Accessories categories, which achieved record high annual sale totals following the autumn sales. Across the cluster, we were honoured to handle a number of prestigious collections, including jewellery from the collection of legendary Hong Kong actress Rosamund Kwan, the Triazza and Champion watch collections, rare Louis Vuitton Trunks from a Japanese collector and, last but not least, Iconic Wines from Joseph Lau.
