The Plum Ripens – Buddhist Art Along the Chinese Silk Road

25–30 May
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

The works in the current exhibition tell the story of Buddhism’s transmission along the Chinese silk road and various trade routes, from India eastward to the Korean Peninsula, northward to Mongolia, and southward to Yunan and southern China.

Buddhism is unique amongst world religions in its inclusive nature, and often assimilate local beliefs into its theology, be it Bon of Tibet, Shamanism of Jurchen, Benzhuism of Yunnan or Daoism of China. These variations come together to create a symphony that is rich and multifarious, vibrating throughout Asia.

The early works include those from the Sixteen Kingdoms, Northern Wei, Balhae and Sila Kingdoms; while the classical period include those from Tang, Tubo, Guge, Five Dynasty, Liao, Xixia and Dali Kingdom. We end the exhibition with Yuan and Ming, where we witness the influence of Nepal and Catholicism on Buddhism.

An Exhibition of Important Chinese Jades from the Robert Chang Collection

25–30 May
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

An excellent eye with an enduring passion for beauty and exquisitely made objects, is how one would describe Mr. Robert Chang’s incredible collecting life over the span of almost a century.

Mr. Chang made collecting his lifetime hobby: at first he started with modern Chinese paintings and then went on to Imperial Qing dynasty ceramics. He did not stop there however, and has continued over the years with cloisonne enamels, rhinoceros horn carvings, snuff bottles and eventually to jade carvings.

This May, Christie’s Hong Kong is honoured to present this non-selling collection and would like to thank Mr. Chang for his immense generosity in sharing his passion with fellow enthusiasts and collectors.
