14 World Auction Records Set Spanning Asian and Western Art
Drawing a full saleroom and spirited bidding from collectors worldwide, Christie’s held the live 20th/21st Century Spring Auctions from 27 – 28 March 2026 during Hong Kong Art Week, achieving a total of HK$886,876,790 / US$113,337,256, and continuing Christie’s Asia market leadership for the fifth season. Overall, 94% of lots sold, the hammer price was 121% above the low estimate, and 52% of lots sold over high estimate – all metrics grew versus Spring 2025. Christie’s specialists brought together a rich variety of quality works, astutely priced, and the market reacted. Strong regional activity was driven by Greater China, with spending from Southeast Asia up a significant 20% year-on-year.
Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild achieved HK$92,100,000 / US$11,769,799 and led the 100%-sold Evening Sale. There was much competition for the overall Chinese Modern selection, which was 100% sold, led by a beautiful horse painting by Sanyu, which realised HK$63,940,000 / US$8,171,128. Reflecting Asia’s diverse tastes, 14 auction records were set across the sale series for artists from around the world, from Old Masters to up-and-rising Contemporary artists. Collectors vied for works across price points in the two Day Sales, resulting in an outstanding hammer price of 135% above the low estimate. The superb offering of Southeast Asian art was led by the world-auction-record-breaking Walter Spies landscape, and the hotly contested private Vietnamese art collection of Melchior Dejouany hammered at 154% over the low estimate.
