Josef Albers était un artiste d’origine allemande célèbre pour ses contributions extraordinaires à la théorie des couleurs. Ayant débuté sa carrière au Bauhaus avant d’émigrer aux États-Unis, il est surtout connu pour sa longue série de peintures intitulée Homage to the Square. Son art était étroitement lié à sa pratique pédagogique, qui a abouti à son traité historique de 1963, Interaction of Colour. Pendant un demi-siècle, il a montré à des générations de futurs artistes comment appréhender le spectre chromatique.
Albers est arrivé au Bauhaus de Weimar en 1920. C’est là qu’il a rencontré sa future épouse Anni, qui allait devenir une artiste textile de renom. En 1925, après le déménagement de l’école à Dessau, Albers est devenu l’un des premiers étudiants du Bauhaus à être nommé maître, enseignant aux côtés de figures telles que Paul Klee et Wassily Kandinsky. Travaillant dans diverses disciplines, notamment le verre, la photographie et la menuiserie, il a produit des œuvres majeures, dont ses emblématiques Nesting Tables.
Après la fermeture du Bauhaus en 1933, Albers s’installa aux États-Unis. Il y occupa un poste d’enseignant au Black Mountain College, une institution radicale de Caroline du Nord, où il resta jusqu’en 1949. Au fil des ans, il attira de nombreux talents prometteurs vers l’établissement, notamment Robert Rauschenberg en tant qu’étudiant, ainsi que Willem de Kooning et Robert Motherwell en tant que jeunes enseignants. Au cours de cette période, Anni et lui effectuèrent de fréquents voyages au Mexique, où ils se découvrirent une passion pour l’art et l’architecture précolombiens qui allait exercer une influence majeure sur son langage abstrait.
En 1950, Albers fut nommé directeur du département de design nouvellement créé à l’université de Yale. Cette année-là, il entama sa série Structural Constellation, composée de dessins géométriques et d’estampes. Il réalisa également son premier Homage to the Square, lançant ainsi le cycle qui l’occuperait jusqu’à sa mort, 26 ans plus tard. Ces carrés imbriqués devinrent des laboratoires d’exploration des effets changeants de la couleur, chacun offrant de profondes révélations sur son comportement dans différents contextes. Albers appliquait la peinture à l’huile à l’aide d’un couteau à palette, adoptant finalement la face rugueuse du Masonite comme support.
Aujourd’hui, ces peintures comptent parmi ses réalisations les plus marquantes et atteignent les prix les plus élevés lors des ventes aux enchères. Des œuvres telles que « Homage to the Square: White Nimbus » (1964) et « Study for Homage to the Square: Red Tetrachord » (1962) ont obtenu d’excellents résultats chez Christie’s.
