Christie’s has offered superb examples of American folk art since its first sales of Americana in 1979. The category has grown to include a wide range of works, including weathervanes, needlework samplers and paintings, by well-known artists such as Edward Hicks, Ammi Phillips and Sheldon Peck as well as anonymous practitioners. American folk art sales take place in January and September in conjunction with sales of American furniture and decorative arts.
Outsider art is an increasingly important area of today’s art world, with major museums continuing to establish collections and hold exhibitions to promote the field. In recent years, Christie’s has seen exceptional results in this category with artists such as Henry Darger, William Edmondson and Bill Traylor attracting a wide audience of collectors. Outsider art sales take place in January and September.
