Gabriel Orozco is widely regarded as one of the most influential Latin American artists of his generation, celebrated for redefining sculpture through fleeting interventions, games and nomadic engagement with everyday materials. Born in Xalapa, Veracruz in 1962, Orozco grew up in Mexico City surrounded by the leftist intellectual circle of his father, the muralist Mario Orozco Rivera. Eschewing a traditional studio practice in favour of an itinerant approach, Orozco is know for transforming city streets, public parks and found detritus into subtle artistic actions.

Emerging in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Orozco achieved international prominence by bridging conceptual strategies with a deeply tactile, human-scale sensibility. His seminal works frequently reframe discarded objects or disrupt urban systems: Piedra que cede (Yielding Stone, 1992), a ball of plasticine equivalent to his own weight rolled through street dust to absorb the city's debris; La DS (1993), a classic Citroën automobile sliced lengthways and reassembled as a streamlined single-seater; and Horses Running Endlessly (1995), a modified chessboard featuring only knights. Working fluidly across sculpture, photography, drawing and installation, Orozco repeatedly returns to motifs of geometry, movement and organic cycles — notably through his ongoing Samurai Tree series of geometric paintings governed by knight's moves, which are particularly sought after by collectors.

In addition to his studio practice, Orozco has occupied a crucial role as an educator and cultural catalyst. In the late 1980s, his informal weekly workshops in Mexico City (Taller de los Viernes) nurtured a vital generation of contemporary artists, including Abraham Cruzvillegas and Damián Ortega. His major mid-career achievements include representing Mexico at the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) and directing the transformative urban master plan for Chapultepec Park.

Orozco's work has been the subject of major travelling retrospectives organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2009–2011) — which toured to the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kunstmuseum Basel and Tate Modern in London — as well as a comprehensive career survey at the Museo Jumex in Mexico City. His masterworks are held in prestigious public institutions globally, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Collection in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Colección Isabel y Agustín Coppel.
