The drum-shaped case with leafy mounts and flanked by the figure of Cupid extending a tribute to Venus, with quiver and arrow below, on white marble breakfront base with fluted convex sides and a recessed panel to the front within a foliate scrolling mount, on grey marble plinth with engine-milled bun feet, the white enamel Arabic dial with pierced gilt-metal criss-cross hands, the dial maker's signature Coteau below 6, the twin barrel movement with silk suspension and countwheel strike on bell

Lot Essay

Joseph Coteau, 1740-1812 was the most famous enameller of his era, he supplied dials for all the great clockmakers and specialised in fine gold relief modelling and translucent enamel jewelling; for further examples see lots 86, 122 and 125.
